Every month of July, the Cultural Center of the Philippines
is jam-packed and bursting with students, movie enthusiasts and critics to
watch the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Movie Festival.
Lately, it’s been an
issue whether Cinemalaya is still relevant or not.
Cinemalaya is still relevant because of the following
reasons:
- · It is where the new talents like film makers, actors and actresses are discovered because they didn’t get the chance to be in the mainstream industry.
- · The Filipino independent film makers can freely express and interpret their artistic abilities.
- · The films sincerely and clearly depicted the lives of the Filipino people, portraying the harsh reality that the Filipinos lived in.
- · Cinemalaya is still significant because through this, we could express art and we could experiment different "tastes" of a story that cannot be shown in mainstream.
Just as Laurice Guillien said in the opening night of
Cinemalaya last July 20, film makers should do more films about and for the Filipinos, in which we can
relate to.
